Merchants of Cool

OK. My friend Earl has mentioned the video, "Merchants of Cool" found on PBS.org several times, so I thought I would watch it. Needless to say...I am highly disturbed!

The whole concept is how corporate giants like viacom, sprite and aol/time warner market to 18-24 year olds. The idea is that they present their products and ideas in such a way as to convince the audience they are creating their own culture, while in actuality, they are basically wrapping their own product agenda in a "look at what you've created" package and laid it at their front door.

I couldn't believe the process marketing firms and add agenencies go through to market to teens and young adults. Is this the company giving the consumer what they are asking for, or is the company choosing what the consumer wants?...very fine line here.

Sex, rage and rebellion were all presented as possible results of the advertising methods in pop culture. Are teenagers natually sexually-driven, rage-filled, rebellious members of society, or is it possible that bottom-line money-driven coorporations have taken advantage of the naturally self-centered judgement of teenagers only to create this "attitude?" I tend to say "yes, it's entirely possible."

There is nothing inherantly wrong with advertising. Everyone is affected by marketing. Who hasn't gone promptly to the refrigerator after watching a commercial for their favorite soft drink?! The scary part for me is...what will come from the next "cool hunt?"

If TV, movies, music, books, magazines, internet, etc. say "depravity is the next cool" (I am not totally convinced they haven't said that already), what comes after that? We've seen the debt (money and quality of life) that has been caused by the "gotta keep up" idea in pop culture...what is next?

Why can't hope be the next "cool"...or joy...or peace...or a RIGHT understanding of self??? Maybe someone can explain this to me. I guess I need one of the "reverse mentors" Earl also tells me about. Everything seems so backward to me.

What makes something "cool" anyway...that's a whole other segment of the video...not enough time.

Till next time...I've gotta chew on this a while...my brain is fuzzy. :o)

"Super Gloves"

In case you don't know...I am now an official preschool teacher. I have about 12 little 2-3 year-olds who, today, all affecionately referred to me as "Ms. Aunt Rhonda."

I want to tell you about Taylor.

Taylor LOVES Batman. He wears Batman t-shirts, Batman pants, Batman socks, Batman shoes...and he is going to BE Batman for Halloween. (you must understand, Taylor is not just dressing up like Batman for Halloween, he is going to BE Batman. He tells me there is a distinct difference between the two)

Today, Taylor brought two blue gloves with him to school. He put them in his pockets during the lesson and lunch time. They were cute blue gloves, but I had no idea they were so powerful...

Outside at recess, I felt a tap on the side of my leg, and I heard, "Ms. Aunt Rhonda...Ms. Aunt Rhonda...Ms. Aunt Rhonda..." When I knelt to turn toward the voice, my face was met with the two blue gloves. Taylor said (in his oh-so-superhero voice) "SUPERGLOVES." He then went running around the playground.

Before I knew it, Taylor was fixing situations of all shapes and sizes with his "supergloves." When Isaiah fell down, Taylor said, "don't worry...SUPERGLOVES." Surprisingly, Isaiah was all better after that. When Nicole and Deven were fighting, Taylor took care of it with a simple ""SUPERGLOVES" routine.

I think I need a pair of those blue "supergloves." How bout you?

My Camping Compromise

Daniel and I just returned from a camping gettaway!  I have never really enjoyed tent camping (sorry, jared and Crystal), so my in-laws graciously offered their camping trailer for us to stay in.  (mostly because they know what it's like to live off an assistant pastor's salary) :o)  I had the best of both worlds...the woods and a shower!!

Today we enjoyed our lunch (tomato sandwiches) in a canoe on the lake.  I loved it!  The day got even better when Evan and Gideon joined us and we went for a hike on a small trail.  Evan got to see the deer and make magical "splashes" in the lake.  Nothing could be better...

God gave me a toothbrush!

God gave me a toothbrush. This may seem small and simple to you, but I am convinved that there are times God does things just to show us how faithful He really is. See, I needed a new toothbrush, but I just couldn't seem to find the time to go to the store and get one, or...when I got to the store I would forget I needed one. When the bristles started falling out of the one I had at home, I new I had a problem.

So...

A lady at church, Nazaire, does dental education at local public schools, and she came to talk to our women's bible study about "self-health." At the very end, she gave me a special gift, and in it was...you guessed it...my new toothbrush!

So often in life, I dwell on the big things. I ask God to intervene in the BIG areas of life. I pray for strength, peace, and health. I praise Him for His might and the vastness of his glory. I am in awe of His greatness. Then, he reminds me that though He knows all and is in all...He knows the BIG needs I have...He also remembers to provide for the smallest.

I guess if I really want to do my best to be more and more like God, I need to "be faithful in the little things" also. Wow, I have so much to learn...

Boxes! Boxes! Boxes!

Cardboard boxes are taking over my life!

We are finishing last minute packing, and getting ready to load up the moving truck tomorrow. We are on our way to California! The fact that it has been beautiful this week in Seattle does not make it easy to leave...but, the great California climate is waiting!

We will miss Seattle. We have met wonderful people here! We will take their kind faces and encouraging words with us always.
